Quiet-stance sway
You stand still for about half a minute while the phone records gentle movement; it reports a neutral sway measurement to keep and share, never a balance score or a result.
Experimental check-in task — not a cleared or approved medical device. This task records a neutral measurement for you to keep and share. It does not score you, does not say what any number means, and does not diagnose. Only a clinician can interpret it.
What this task looks at
This task looks at gentle movement while standing still — small amounts of sway the phone's motion sensor picks up when you try to stand quietly.
What you'll do
Stand still for around 30 seconds with the phone held or in a pocket. Before you start, Lantern reminds you to find a safe space, suggests having someone nearby if helpful, and says to skip it if you feel unsteady today. A Stop button is always available.
What it records
Neutral measurements of movement from the phone's accelerometer:
- Sway path length — the total length of the small movement path, in millimetres (mm).
- Sway area / RMS — a figure describing how much movement there was overall.
Each is shown with its units and the method version used, plus a short note on what the task looked at. These describe recorded movement only.
What it does not do
It does not tell you whether your balance is good, poor, normal, or a sign of anything. It records movement numbers; your clinician interprets them.
Not the same as
This is an original, own-authored task. It is not and is not equivalent to clinical or instrumented posturography, the Berg Balance Scale, or the Romberg test. This task does not reproduce them.
Experimental. Not a cleared or approved medical device. Records a neutral measurement only — no diagnosis, no interpretation. Skip if you feel unsteady.

Each task records one kind of neutral measurement — for reflection and conversation with a clinician, never a diagnosis.
