Consent
What you are agreeing to when you choose to capture, measure, or share information in Lantern — and how to change your mind.
Consent, in plain terms
Lantern only does something with your information when you ask it to. Because the information you keep in Lantern is health information — a special category of personal data under UK data-protection law — we ask for your explicit consent before any sensor is used or any record is shared. This page explains what that consent covers and how to withdraw it. It sits alongside the fuller Privacy Policy.
What we ask you to consent to
Consent in Lantern is granular — you agree to each thing separately, and you can say yes to some and no to others:
- Capturing your own words. Keeping the notes, events, and questions you write, on your device.
- Using a sensor for a check-in task. Each optional task asks before it uses the touchscreen, motion sensors, or the microphone for voice tasks. You can decline any of them and still use the rest of Lantern.
- Keeping a voice recording. For voice tasks, audio is processed on your device and discarded by default. Keeping a recording rather than only the measurement is a separate choice you make.
- Syncing across your own devices. If you use an optional account, keeping your record in step across the devices that are yours.
- Sharing with a clinician. Generating a time-limited, revocable share-link, and choosing exactly what a summary includes.
What consent means here
- Freely given. Declining any item does not lock you out — the rest of Lantern keeps working.
- Specific and informed. We tell you what each item is for, in plain language, before you agree.
- Unambiguous. Consent is a clear, affirmative action — never a pre-ticked box or silence.
- Explicit for health data. Because this is special-category data, we ask for explicit consent under Article 9(2)(a) of the UK GDPR.
- Recorded. Lantern keeps a consent and sharing ledger so you can see what you agreed to and what you shared.
Withdrawing consent
You can change your mind at any time:
- Turn off a sensor or feature in the app's settings or when a task next asks.
- Stop syncing or sign out of an optional account.
- Revoke a share-link so a clinician can no longer open what you shared.
- Delete your data in the app, or send a data-deletion request from the web.
Withdrawing consent stops future processing for that purpose. It does not undo processing that already, lawfully, took place before you withdrew — for example a summary a clinician has already received.
If you are supporting someone else
Lantern supports carers and family members. If you capture or manage information on behalf of another person, you should only do so with their knowledge and agreement (or where you are lawfully authorised to act for them). Lantern keeps a person's record and a carer's record clearly labelled and never merges them.
Consent and diagnosis
Consenting to capture or share information does not turn Lantern into a medical opinion. Lantern does not diagnose, score, or interpret your data. Only a qualified clinician can do that.
Some parts of Lantern — including the check-in tasks and any clinician-facing tooling — are early-stage and experimental, and not a cleared or approved medical device. We say so plainly wherever it appears. This consent notice is a draft that will be finalised before launch.
