What it is, in plain words

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a strong, uncomfortable urge to move your legs, usually with an odd feeling deep inside them — a bit like crawling, tingling, or aching. It tends to come on when you are resting, especially in the evening or in bed, and moving around brings relief for a while. Because it often strikes at night, it can make it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep.

RLS is a real condition, not "fidgeting" or a habit. The broken sleep and evening discomfort can be genuinely wearing, and it deserves to be taken seriously.

The kinds of experiences people track

A simple record can help you and your clinician see the pattern. People often note:

  • When the urge to move comes on, and how strong it feels.
  • What the feeling in your legs is like.
  • What helps — walking, stretching, warmth, or cold.
  • How it affects falling asleep and staying asleep.
  • How you feel the next day — tired, low, or unfocused.
  • Anything that seems to make it worse, like caffeine or certain evenings.

How Lantern helps

Lantern is a calm space to jot these evenings and nights down in your own words, so the link between the urge, your rest, and your sleep is easy to show. Over time your notes build into a clearer story you can share.

Your clinician may use their own measures to understand how RLS affects you — for example a severity questionnaire such as the International Restless Legs Scale (IRLS), or a sleep record. Lantern lets you note the names of the tools your clinician uses so you can talk about the same things. Lantern does not carry them out, fill them in, or score your symptoms — that is your clinician's role. Lantern simply helps you bring a clearer account.

A gentle note

Lantern is a companion, not a doctor. It does not diagnose restless legs syndrome, measure your sleep, or tell you what your symptoms mean. Several things can cause these feelings, so if they are new, getting worse, or affecting your sleep and mood, please speak to your GP, who can look into the cause and guide your care.
