What it is, in plain words

NMOSD (neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder) and MOGAD (MOG antibody-associated disease) are rare conditions where the body's defence system attacks parts of the brain, spinal cord, or the nerves to the eyes. They often come as "attacks" or relapses, which may then partly or fully settle. They can affect vision, movement, sensation, bladder, and balance.

Because these conditions are uncommon, many people feel they have had to explain themselves again and again. Keeping your own clear record can help you feel more prepared, and less alone, at each appointment.

The kinds of experiences people track

A simple record can help you and your team follow attacks and recovery. People often note:

  • Vision changes — blurring, pain on eye movement, or loss of sight.
  • Weakness, numbness, tingling, or bladder changes.
  • When an attack started, and how it changed day by day.
  • How well things recover afterwards.
  • Fatigue, pain, sleep, and mood.
  • Everyday effects on work, family, and confidence.

How Lantern helps

Lantern is a calm space to capture these changes in your own words as they happen, so the shape of an attack and your recovery is not lost between appointments. Over time your notes build into a clearer story you can share.

Because these are rare conditions, your neurology team may follow you with their own examinations and measures — for example the EDSS, along with vision and symptom records they keep. Lantern lets you note the names of the tools your team uses so you can talk about the same things. Lantern does not carry them out, fill them in, or score your symptoms — that is your clinician's job. Lantern simply helps you bring a clear, honest account.

A gentle note

Lantern is a companion, not a doctor. It does not diagnose NMOSD or MOGAD, test your nerves, or tell you what your symptoms mean. New loss of vision, new weakness, or sudden changes can signal an attack that needs prompt treatment — contact your neurology team urgently, or seek emergency help if it is severe. For other concerns, speak to your team or GP.
